This Video Surveillance Calculator helps security integrators estimate the precise bandwidth and storage required for IP camera systems. By inputting resolution, frame rate (FPS), and retention days, you can accurately size your NVR and storage appliances.
In order to calculate both video surveillance bandwidth and NVR storage, simply specify the following parameters in the video surveillance calculator. Make sure to “+add new camera type” to account for each type of IP camera and usage in order to accurately calculate the security system requirements. Whether you are looking for an NVR (Network Video Recorder) or Network Storage System, this Video Surveillance storage & bandwidth calculator will give you accurate results.
When designing a security and video surveillance system, network bandwidth requirements and storage space for live recording and archiving video are crucial parameters. We designed the advanced Video Surveillance Bandwidth and Storage Calculator, to intelligently calculate both parameters automatically. This smart tool obtains accurate estimations of network bandwidth and storage to enhance surveillance system design. Get estimations of required network bandwidth to shape network video systems with any number of IP cameras and video servers. Calculate the required HDD storage space for video archive. The Arxys Bandwidth and Storage Calculator utilizes the data from the surveillance configuration to show which storage servers will deliver the required bandwidth and capacity. In order to calculate both bandwidth and storage, simply specify following parameters in the calculator.

Use our free online, guaranteed accurate, video surveillance storage and bandwidth calculator to accurately confirm your system requirements and calculate the required bandwidth and storage capacity of your video surveillance system.
A video surveillance calculator is a free online tool that estimates the network bandwidth and storage capacity needed for an IP camera system. You input parameters like camera count, resolution, frame rate, and compression codec, and it instantly outputs your NVR storage and bandwidth requirements.
Enter the number of cameras, video resolution (e.g. 1080p, 4MP, 4K), frames per second, compression type (H.264 or H.265), and how many days of footage you need to retain. The calculator will output the minimum usable disk space required in gigabytes or terabytes.
A typical 1080p camera at 15fps using H.265 compression uses approximately 1–2 Mbps. At 30fps with H.264, the same camera may use 3–5 Mbps. Multiply by your total camera count to estimate total network throughput needed.
H.265 (also called HEVC) delivers roughly 50% storage and bandwidth savings compared to H.264 at equivalent video quality. For large camera deployments, switching to H.265 can cut your storage hardware costs in half.
Usable disk space is the net storage available after accounting for formatting, RAID parity, and system overhead. Raw capacity is the number printed on the drive. Always size your NVR to the usable figure — not the raw number — to avoid running out of recording space.
A 1Gbps switch can theoretically support around 200–300 cameras at 1080p/15fps with H.265. In practice, plan for no more than 60–70% utilization, so roughly 120–200 cameras, to maintain headroom for motion spikes and remote viewing traffic.
mage complexity refers to how much detail and motion is in a camera’s field of view. A busy intersection or crowded retail floor produces larger frame sizes than an empty hallway, even at the same resolution and frame rate. High-complexity scenes can increase storage needs by 2–3x compared to low-complexity ones.
Once you’ve entered your configuration, you can request a guaranteed quote. Arxys will match your bandwidth and storage results to certified storage appliances that are verified to meet your exact system requirements.
