What factors affect NVR bandwidth requirements?

  • Video Streams– Number of each type of camera lens in the surveillance system. If multi-sensor cameras count the total number of sensors and use that as the video streams
  • Resolution – Pixels of the camera in the group
  • CODEC – Which CODEC you will use to record the video. NOTE: VideoX V5 eliminates the h.265 penalty so you can record video using h.265 at full line speed without reducing camera counts.
  • FPS – Frames per second recorded by the camera
  • Scene Complexity – Frames from some CCTV cameras are more detailed and have a higher frame size, low complexity requires less bandwidth & storage, high complexity requires more. Simple scene: empty hallway, plain walls → uses less storage. Complex scene: parking lot with cars, trees, shadows → uses more storage.
  • HRS/DAY Recording  – Operational hours within a 24 hour period (continuous recording value is 24) anything less means record on motion ONLY
  • Motion % in Scene – Percentage of Pixel change when motion occurs. (Used for H.265 and H.264 bandwidth estimation) No movement: very little new data.  Lots of movement: lots of new data.
  • Retention Days  – Retention period in days

A video surveillance calculator is a free online tool that estimates the network bandwidth and storage capacity needed for an IP camera system. You input parameters like camera count, resolution, frame rate, and compression codec, and it instantly outputs your NVR storage and bandwidth requirements.

Enter the number of cameras, video resolution (e.g. 1080p, 4MP, 4K), frames per second, compression type (H.264 or H.265), and how many days of footage you need to retain. The calculator will output the minimum usable disk space required in gigabytes or terabytes.

A typical 1080p camera at 15fps using H.265 compression uses approximately 1–2 Mbps. At 30fps with H.264, the same camera may use 3–5 Mbps. Multiply by your total camera count to estimate total network throughput needed.

H.265 (also called HEVC) delivers roughly 50% storage and bandwidth savings compared to H.264 at equivalent video quality. For large camera deployments, switching to H.265 can cut your storage hardware costs in half.

Usable disk space is the net storage available after accounting for formatting, RAID parity, and system overhead. Raw capacity is the number printed on the drive. Always size your NVR to the usable figure — not the raw number — to avoid running out of recording space.

A 1Gbps switch can theoretically support around 200–300 cameras at 1080p/15fps with H.265. In practice, plan for no more than 60–70% utilization, so roughly 120–200 cameras, to maintain headroom for motion spikes and remote viewing traffic.

A busy intersection or crowded retail floor produces larger frame sizes than an empty hallway, even at the same resolution and frame rate. High-complexity scenes can increase storage needs by 2–3x compared to low-complexity ones.
