The Right Windows OS for Your Video Surveillance Infrastructure

Just like Arxys does not use general purpose servers for video surveillance, we also don’t use general purpose Windows OS’s. Every Arxys server and workstation always ships with the LTSC (now known as IOT) custom version of Windows OS. Whether desktop or Server OS both have the same core benefits.

LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) is a special Windows edition that receives only security updates for 10 years while staying on the same feature version, designed for systems that need maximum stability. IoT (Internet of Things)editions are Microsoft’s embedded/specialized Windows versions built for dedicated-purpose devices and servers, offering the same long-term stability with stripped-down features for mission-critical applications.

Windows LTSC/IoT for Video Surveillance Servers

Core Stability Benefits

  • Locked Build Version – Your surveillance system stays on a proven, stable Windows version for up to 10 years, eliminating the risk of monthly feature updates breaking your video management software (VMS)
  • Predictable Update Schedule – Receives only critical security updates, not the constant feature changes and redesigns that standard Windows pushes out, meaning fewer disruptions and less maintenance
  • “Set and Forget” Reliability – Once configured and tested, the system runs consistently without unexpected changes to how it operates or interfaces with your cameras and recording software

Performance Advantages

  • Stripped-Down Design – Removes unnecessary consumer features (Microsoft Store, Cortana, Edge browser bloat, gaming components) that waste system resources needed for video processing and storage
  • More Resources for Video – Without background apps and services you don’t need, more CPU, RAM, and disk performance goes directly to recording, analyzing, and serving camera feeds
  • Faster Boot and Recovery – Leaner OS means quicker startup times if servers need to reboot, minimizing surveillance downtime

Long-Term Operation Benefits

  • Extended Support Lifecycle – LTSC/IoT editions receive 10 years of security support versus 2-3 years for standard Windows, matching the typical lifespan of surveillance infrastructure
  • Reduced Testing Burden – Your IT team only validates security patches, not monthly feature updates, saving time and reducing the chance of compatibility issues with specialized VMS software
  • Lower Maintenance Costs – Fewer updates mean less staff time spent on update management, testing, and troubleshooting broken functionality

Both Desktop and Server editions deliver the same stability-focused philosophy tailored to their respective roles in your surveillance infrastructure.

LTSC versions cannot be upgraded in-place to newer releases like standard Windows—their stability-focused design intentionally locks them to a specific build version. Moving to a new LTSC version requires purchasing a new license and performing a clean installation with a fresh OS image, which ensures the system maintains its proven reliability without carrying forward accumulated changes.
